Production meeting #3

Production Meeting 27/02/14  12:20

During this meeting Chloe was unable to attend however she emailed me the story board she created which was looking very impressive

We also went out and started looking at different locations

Notes from the meeting

- need to begin casting voices and characters
- suggestions made with sound and introducing text
- permissions for locations

Production meeting #2

Production Meeting 26/02/14 14:30

During this meeting in the library a few people had a few questions regarding the story and how it would be executed, at this time the script was not completely finished so that was understandable, but then eventually everyone was up to speed. Ulysses presented some of hes findings that he was doing some research on, he analysed different films and took out Cd's from library about using sound. He also mentioned tutorials he particularly looked about text animation with film. For example

This was a great of a movie using visual effects with text, it really helped everyone understand exactly I wanted it to look like. Of course this is a quite skilled and difficult technique do, with that in mind I am not expecting the level of visual effects for the film to be at the same level, however at the same aspire to deliver the same level of professionalism.

Other pieces of research and findings were also presented by everyone else, Chloe began working on the story board productions schedule, and risk assessments. We all discussed certain scenes and how they will be acted. People made a few contributions and we made a few changes for we decided include another character in a scene where who encounters the main character as an old friend however the main character has no idea who he is. We wanted to add an essence of humor and comedy to it and not make it too serious. Dowan presented a video he found with a scene showing a POV shot of someone being dragged across the ground, and we all decided we should attempt to recreate this scene for our film.

We concluded the interview with assigning everyone with task's which they must complete for the next meeting.

Pitch Presentation

The goal and intention for this project is that I want the audience to understand the underline meaning of this film, which is that our memories are precious and valuable jewels that that we try to cherish and reminisce. I hope when watching the film the viewers establish a connection to there own memories and hope they rekindle so past experiences of there memories

Leah pitch response/review

Pitch tutorial 17/02/2014   16:40 meeting

As I pitched my idea to Leah today she seems to really like the concept and the Idea, she likes the extensive research that I have made for the film and enjoys the direction I am trying to go with incorporating sound and text.

In terms of actually pitching the idea Leah recommends me to keep the pitch a bit more brief, as when I was presenting today I went over the time limit. Also as I was displaying various pieces of content I was using my blog to provide the information, so I had to keep tracking back and forth through different pages on my blog which wasn't the most effective method when pitching my idea. As a result of this for the pitch I am going to present my pitch through Prezi.
Prezi_logo.jpg (1121×447)

Leah also recommended me to watch a film by Filmmaker Jonathan Caouette called Tarnation, as the film displays the same methods in which I would like to incorporate in my own film

Key points

  • Keep pitch organized
  • don't let it drag on too long
  • ensure you present the key information in the correct order
  • practice the pitch and time yourself

Reflections Pitch Idea

A few developments for my Idea

Main Idea

For my final chosen Idea I have to convey the theme of memory as a natural organic luxury that increases in value throughout time. To everyone we all have precious memories in certain times in our life's, whether they are embarrassing and hilarious  moments on a  night out with friends or cherishing special moments with family and loved ones, there all moments which we can relive again and go back to. However as we get older and encounter new experiences, new memories are born and old memories gradually fade away. So for my project I want to convey the theme of memory being a precious valuable asset that in time gradually fades away as new memories are born. A film about how precious and valuable our memories are. the films is about highlighting the importance of our memories and how we wish we could relive and embrace those memories again, however as we get older our memories gradually fade away.

The film is going to be about an young man who lives a normal basic life but one day hes life dramatically changes when one day he a encounters a situation where he suffers a life threatening accident but luckily survives as he recovers he suffers from temporary memory loss. However to help aid hes recovery he discovers that finding objects items or certain places can trigger back certain memories, he faces the threat of permanently losing hes memory forever. As he comes to terms of the situation he creates video blogs constantly tracking hes thoughts and progress with the memory loss

Inspiration

I got this idea from an old show I used to watch a while ago it was about a family that takes in a formerly institutionalized teen savant  who is missing standard human behaviors such as anger, joy and love. When he is discovered he has no memory of who he is or where he comes from, however through time as he encounters new experiences he gradually regains certain moments of hes past, certain things start to trigger hes memory. What I found quite interesting is that as humans as we grow we all grown up and encounter new experiences and get older our memories gradually fade away, but in this show Kyle XY the main character originally starts his life with no memory, no connections to hes experiences in the past however as time goes on he gradually begins to recover hes memory.

Kyle XY Season One Trailer

Now this is completely fiction so I want to take this idea and recreate it to create a non fiction film about memory

Clock ticking sound effect

One of the ways in which I want to convey the aspect of memory that diminishes in time is through objects that share the same characteristics. Once used they start to burn out and then unable to be used again. The videos uploaded above are examples of ways in which I want to incorporate the aspect of memory and how it can be represented

A Man Who Delivers from Jamie Jessett on Vimeo.

"Sound" from SoundCloud on Vimeo.

For the film I want to stray away from the conventional methods of creating film and using dialogue, for the film I want the information to specifically perceived through text and

Diegetic and non Diegetic sounds. I particularly like watching the film uploaded above as it

strongly uses the use of text for the video. For my video I want to experiment with the use of text and sound with a limited amount of speech and dialogue.

Experimental sound Project brief

Project brief

Taking one of the artworks provided, interpret, record edit and mix an experimental sound consisting of only sound. The piece should last between 1 and 2 minutes in duration and implement experimental techniques of audio production as explored during this unit

should consist of

  • Journey
  • narrative
  • space and or place
  • a passage of time

My chosen piece of artwork

Nighthawks - Edward Hopper (1942)

Nighthawks_by_Edward_Hopper_1942.jpg (6000×3274)

Experimental Sound workshop - Microphones

During this session of our experimental sound workshop on the 7th of February we focused on location recording, and discussed the importance of sound with footage. A few examples of sound artists which we have looked at are

Darren Hayman & Dan Mayfield    http://lidomusic.blogspot.co.uk/
Chris Watson http   ://www.chriswatson.net/downloads.html

We also explored various different microphones and the purpose in which compliments them best.

  • Condenser microphones
  • SHURE SM57
  • AKG C414

Microphone Types

•  Condenser (Electret)

– Highly responsive

– Crisp sound
– Delicate

  •  Dynamic
– Sturdy
– Copes well with loud sounds

We were given these microphones to go out and create our own field recordings

One thing I learned from recording is that you can pick up a lot of wind that can distort the sound a bit.

Time Art brief

Overview of the Project This is an individual project that should enable you to explore, research and reflect on the ideas/concept of “Time”. How  can time be represented/expressed? How has time been explored in the arts before? How will time affect your future? What does Time mean to you? How does Time affect you? What does time make you feel? From your research, find an time related subject or area that interests you and using Adobe After Effects, You will plan and create a multi screen visual piece of work comprising of 3x 1min looped films that will be screened simultaneously on three separate Portrait HD screens. You must detail your research of both the concept and the techniques you have used to create the film, and evidence this through an online Blogger Blog. This will be assessed along with the final film against the unit

Reflections brief

FDSA4004 REFLECTIONS
PROJECT BRIEF 2013/14

An investigation of human/machine memory in the digital age

In this unit you will explore the theme of memory. This could be through its relationship to the archive – the images, films, objects, documents and traces through which we recall and revisit individual and shared memories and histories. You could also consider or imagine possible futures and how these may link to the present and the past. For example you could choose to examine life cycles: replenishment or regeneration, the old constantly being replaced by the new, or even the young usurping the old. From seed to harvest, a cake baked and eaten, the repurposing of old things into new, the passing of genes to new generations and so on. The possibilities are endless.

Through film screenings, presentations, workshops and seminars we will examine the complex and, often conflicted, relationship between memory and its representations.

1) Working in groups of four you should make a digitally shot and edited video of 5-10 minutes duration. You are asked to make a fact based film using an experimental approach. Meaning should not be overwhelmingly reliant on synch dialogue and other forms of language should be considered such as voice over, think track, overheard voices, body language and so on. You are not encouraged to use a formal narrative structure. You should use this brief as an opportunity to experiment and try to adopt a more fragmented approach to moving image and sound.

2) Each student should produce a set or series of five still images around the themes of the unit. The images could incorporate found images and other media with your own digital stills. The project should also have a textual component and a considered design for presenting the work.

Each student should keep a blog journal that should evidence of a wide body of research using library, internet, newspapers, critiques of films, visits to galleries, museums, and include personal reflection. Technical notes, visual references, permissions sought, storyboards, location notes and so on, should also be included. Instructions have been posted into MyUCA for you to open up a Blogspot and paste the address into a Google Doc. All posts for this unit should be tagged Reflections so we able to access easily for GreenLight Reviews – dates to be announced.

A basic set of shooting equipment will be pre-booked for you and you will be notified of your allocation. You are free to book out equipment at other times if it is available, provided you have completed the necessary training workshops. Edit time will also be prebooked and it is important to work to the given schedule.

The Brain and retaining information (Research)
brain.jpg (366×307)

When you're in your 20s, you begin to lose brain cells a few at a time. Your body also starts to make less of the chemicals your brain cells need to work. The older you are, the more these changes can affect your memory. Aging may affect memory by changing the way the brain stores information and by making it harder to recall stored information. Your short-term and remote memories aren't usually affected by aging. But your recent memory may be affected. For example, may forget names of people you've met recently. These are normal changes.

What are some other causes of   memory problems ?

Many things other than aging can cause memory problems. These include depression, dementia (severe problems with memory and thinking, such as Alzheimer's disease), side effects of drugs, strokes, head injury and alcoholism.

Information will quickly disappear forever unless we make a conscious effort to retain it, and short-term memory is a necessary step toward the next stage of retention, long-term memory. The transfer of information to long-term memory for more permanent storage can be facilitated or improved by mental repetition of the information or, even more effectively, by giving it a meaning and associating it with other previously acquired knowledge. Motivation is also a consideration, in that information relating to a subject of strong interest to a person, is more likely to be retained in long-term memory.

Triggering memories

Humans have memory triggers that set off very strong recollections of past experiences. A memory trigger can be a sound, a particular scent, or something you see that flashes you back into your past. These triggers cause you to relive long ago times so intensely, nothing else exists but the moment you are reliving. Memories relived so strongly, so vividly, you feel the same feelings you felt when the memory was born.

Things that trigger my own emotions and emotions

Back in secondary school I attended a camping trip about developing and building leadership skills. I giving a task in which I had to walk about mile down a path all by myself in the middle of the night which was pitch black. I was a little apprehensive and nervous at first but I had this one song in my head and I just kept repeating the song over and over again in my head which kept me occupied and forget and forget walking down a dark path all by myself in the middle of nowhere.

Now to this day every time I play this song all I cab think about is that time where I had to walk down that path.

This chain has a lot of sentimental value to me as it was given to me from my father, whenever I look at it or feel it I immediately have memories of my day when he used to pick me up and take me different places as child

For some strange reason the smell of pasta sauce always makes me think of back when I was in primary school and when we get school dinners there was this pasta we used to have that just tasted amazing, I haven't had that pasta in over 10 years but I can still smell how it tasted like it just ate it 5 minutes ago

Concepts of memory through Art

Attie 45.1993.x1.jpg (520×422)

For The Writing on the Wall project, I slide projected portions of pre-war photographs of Jewish street in Berlin onto the same or nearby addresses today. By using slide projection on location, fragments of the past were thus introduced into the visual field of the present. Thus parts of long destroyed Jewish community life were visually simulated, momentarily recreated. The projections were visible to street traffic, neighborhood residents, and passersby. As much of my art practice is a marriage between photography and installation art, during the course of the installations, I photographed the projections.

Anne Turyn.jpg (800×630)

An interview with novelist Anne Turyn is presented. When asked about if there is a possible thematic link to childhood in her photographs, and if these are autobiographical, Turyn says that those images are from a visual novel, titled "Illustrated Memories," which depicts a life through illustrated memories. She explains that a visual novel uses photographs instead of language to create more of an emotional resonance. She notes that she did not establish a plot to her visual narrative.

Memory Project: An art installation

A Holocaust survivor's riveting testimony about life in the Warsaw ghetto and the brother she lost to the nazis blended with time lapsed images of her daughter painting a series of haunting portraits of that very boy--her uncle. This is the video portion of an art installation

Art Installation: First TV Memory

This is a quite interesting art installing I came across, with this particular project the creator creatively  reconnects us with a past memory he once shared and discusses the recurring emotions he feels when viewing an image of train tracks. I just find this quite fascination how when viewing certain images then can trigger memories of the past.

This definitely something I want to look in to further and potentially incorporate with my own project.

Time Art Treatment

The Idea

My Final chosen Idea each screen will attempt to reflect a different part of who I am, my interests hobbies likes and dislikes but will all be shot in different times of the day, contributing to the primary theme of the project brief 'Time'. There will be a repeated loop of me performing repeated actions that will appear on each screen, each screen will be shot at different times of the day, one screen will be shot in the morning another will be shot in the middle of the day and the last screen will be filmed at night. Although each screen will be played at the same time. They will appear to look like they are all interacting with each other. For example I will walk out of frame in one screen and then will appear to be walking in to frame in another screen, also as part of my persona I can sometimes be deemed as annoying so in one screen I will attempt to annoy another the other Andre on the opposite screen by like throwing something away from the screen then will appear on the opposite screen . One of the main themes that I wish to express through this project is conveying my emotion and personality and using time as a tool to express that. I want the viewer to be able to connect with what I am portraying and be able to understand the message and concept of the film.

Inspiration

I have been inspired by many different works of art to help me decide on my chosen idea. The main component which I really intend on emphasizing is interactivity. And of course the use of multiple screens.

Pipilotti Rist: Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters)

Pipilotti Rist's lush multimedia installations playfully and provocatively merge fantasy and reality. MoMA commissioned the Swiss artist to create a monumental site-specific installation that immerses the Museum's Marron Atrium in twenty-five-foot-high moving images. Visitors will be able to experience the work while walking through the space or sitting upon a sculptural seating island designed by the artist.

Paul Sermon & Andrea Zapp: Body of Water

A site-specific telematic installation linking the shower room of the Ewald/Schlaegel und Eisen mine in Herten with the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg. The images of visitors in the shower room in Herten are mixed with images of the Museum visitors in Duisburg and appear on one side of a water screen. Historical film footage of miners showering are projected onto the other side of the water screen. Realised for the Connected Cities Exhibition, Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum Duisburg in Germany, June 20th to August 1st 1999 (catalogue printed).

Special Effects: Human Cloning and Camera Techniques

Regarding this video I do not particular want to use the clone effect for my video, however the way in which I will edit each video it will create the impression in which It looks like I use the cloning technique.

Arcade Fire - We Used To Wait

This is an amazing interactive video that provides you the ability to be involved with the video by including your own personal details so you become a lot more engaged with the content. Now this is not exactly how I am going to execute my project but I enjoy the techniques which they have used for this video

Test shots

playing Fifa 14 is one of my biggest past times, as I am a big fan of football. So as one of the screens I will be facing the screens holding the controller pad similar to the video above

1 Point Perspective Project Birds Eye View City

The second screen will be more of a birds eye view  of me doing work, or perhaps the same style as the first video but doing a different activity

The third screen will demonstrate a visual of myself watching a movie, the same position as the previous videos, so they will be all aligned together and look symmetrical.

Schedule

  • 17th - 23th I will begin to start finding the perfect location and attempt to start filming the 1st video and the 2nd Video
  • The second week I will begin to start filming the final video and start to experiment with different after effects techniques
  • Then after that I will begin to edit my footage and construct my 3 screened video

Requirements for Video

Adobe After Effects - masking

Adobe premiere pro - Editing

I do not require any models or actors as I will only be featuring on the video
